Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. Indoor comfort lives mostly between 40 and 55 percent relative humidity: drier than that and skin and sinuses complain, wetter and the home feels sticky, smells musty, and grows things you do not want. In our climate, your air conditioner is also your dehumidifier, pulling gallons of water out of the air as a byproduct of cooling.
Why humidity matters in South Florida
Outdoor air here spends most of the year near tropical humidity levels. Every door opening, every duct leak, and every gap in the building lets that moisture in, and your AC has to remove it again. Humidity is also why two homes at the same temperature can feel completely different: 76 degrees at 45 percent humidity feels crisp, while 74 at 65 percent feels like a locker room. When customers say the house “never feels right,” humidity is usually the missing variable.
Signs of a humidity problem
- The home feels sticky or clammy even when the thermostat reads cool.
- Musty smells, condensation on supply vents, or mildew in closets.
- The AC reaches temperature fast but the air never feels dry, a classic sign of an oversized system that short cycles before it can dehumidify.
