Starting is the hardest moment in a compressor’s life, and a short-cycling system does its hardest thing dozens of extra times a day while never running long enough to do its actual job well.
Why short cycling matters in South Florida
The humidity cost is the part our climate makes brutal. Dehumidification happens during long, steady runs, when air spends real time crossing the cold coil. A system that satisfies the thermostat in five minutes and quits never dries the air, which is how a home ends up cool on the thermometer and sticky in the skin. Meanwhile the extra starts pound the compressor, the capacitor, and the contactor, and the electric bill climbs because starting draws far more power than running.
Common causes
