A cycle is one full run of your air conditioner: the thermostat calls for cooling, the system starts, it runs until the home reaches the set temperature, and it shuts off. The length and rhythm of those cycles say a lot about how healthy and how well-sized a system is, which is why technicians pay attention to them.
What a healthy cycle looks like
On a warm Florida afternoon, a properly sized system typically runs in comfortable stretches of roughly fifteen minutes or more, then rests. Long, steady cycles are actually a good thing in our climate: the longer air spends moving across the cold coil, the more moisture the system wrings out of it. A system that blasts the house cold in five minutes and shuts off may sound powerful, but it never runs long enough to dehumidify, which is how you end up cold and clammy at the same time.
When cycles go wrong
Cycles that get very short is called short cycling, and it deserves attention, because rapid starting and stopping is the hardest thing you can do to a compressor. Cycles that never end, where the system runs all afternoon without reaching the set point, suggest the system is losing capacity to a dirty coil, low refrigerant, duct leakage, or a home that has changed since the equipment was sized.
