What Is a Temperature Split?

The difference between the air entering your system and the air leaving it, and the quickest single health check an AC can get.

Illustration of a temperature split

Temperature split, which technicians often call delta T, is the difference between the temperature of the air entering the system at the return and the air leaving it at the supply vents. A healthy residential system typically drops the air 16 to 22 degrees on its pass across the cold coil. Measure both, subtract, and you have a fast, honest read on whether the system is actually doing its job.

Why temperature split matters in South Florida

It is the difference between “the AC feels weak” and “the AC is removing 12 degrees when it should remove 18.” The first is a feeling; the second is evidence. On brutal summer days when everything feels inadequate, the split tells you whether the system itself is performing and the house is simply facing a hard load, or whether the machine has genuinely lost capacity.

What an off split suggests

  • Split too small: the system is not removing enough heat. Suspects include low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or a compressor losing its grip.
  • Split too large: usually an airflow problem. Too little air is crossing the coil, so what does pass gets very cold. Loaded filters and duct restrictions live here.
  • Split fine, house still hot: the equipment works, but the cooling is not reaching the rooms. That points at ducts, leaks, or a load the system was never sized for.

What Kyzar checks

Temperature split is one of the first measurements in our diagnosis, because it sorts the problem into the right category before any parts get discussed. It is also a check you can roughly do yourself with a kitchen thermometer at a return and a supply vent, and telling us that number when you call genuinely helps.
