A mini-split is a split system without the ducts. An outdoor unit connects through a small wall penetration to one or more indoor heads, each mounted high on a wall or ceiling in the room it serves. Each head cools and dehumidifies its own space, with its own remote and its own temperature, and most modern mini-splits use variable-speed technology that ramps smoothly instead of switching on and off.
Where mini-splits make sense in South Florida
Mini-splits shine in spaces your central system was never designed to serve: the garage that doubles as a gym, a converted lanai or Florida room, a detached office or in-law suite, or a bonus room over the garage that never cools right. They also solve homes with no existing ductwork, where adding ducts would be invasive or impossible. Because each head is its own zone, they bring room-by-room control that central systems need dampers and controls to imitate.
What mini-splits are not
They are not automatically the answer for a whole house that already has good ductwork, and a wall head in every room of a large home gets expensive and busy-looking fast. The honest framing: mini-splits are a precision tool for specific spaces, and a central system is usually still the backbone for the main living areas.
