The drain pan sits beneath the evaporator coil and catches the condensate your system wrings out of the air, funneling it into the drain line. Many attic installations also have a second, larger pan under the whole unit as a backup. It is a simple part with one job: be the thing standing between daily gallons of water and your drywall.
Why drain pans matter in South Florida
Our systems dehumidify nearly year round, so the pan almost never gets a chance to dry out. A standard pan sitting in constant moisture rusts, and a rusted pan eventually leaks, usually slowly and invisibly until a stain blooms on the ceiling. This is why Kyzar installs copper drip pans on our systems: copper does not rust through the way builder-grade pans do. It is a small detail that reflects how we think about installations, because the cheapest place to stop a water leak is before it exists.
Signs of a drain pan problem
- Water stains on the ceiling below an attic air handler.
- Standing water or rust visible in the backup pan.
- A musty smell near the indoor unit.
- The system shutting off unexpectedly, which can be the float switch reacting to a filling pan.
What Kyzar checks
Every tune-up includes a look at the pan itself: rust, standing water, proper slope toward the drain, and a working float switch. Standing water in a backup pan is never normal. It means the primary drain path has already failed and the backup is all that is left, which is exactly the moment to fix it cheaply.
