An air handler is the indoor half of a split AC system. It is the metal cabinet, usually in a closet, garage, or attic, that contains the blower motor and, in most Florida homes, the evaporator coil. The outdoor unit removes heat; the air handler is what actually moves air across the cold coil and pushes it through your ducts into every room.
Why the air handler matters in South Florida
In our climate the air handler works nearly year round, and it also handles the moisture side of comfort. As humid indoor air passes over the cold coil inside the cabinet, water condenses out and drains away. That means the air handler is where most drain clogs, rust, and water damage problems start. A copper drip pan and a clean, properly pitched drain line under the air handler are cheap insurance against a ceiling stain that costs far more.
Signs of an air handler problem
- Weak airflow at the vents even with a clean filter.
- Water around the base of the indoor cabinet or a water stain below an attic unit.
- Rattling, squealing, or humming from the closet where the unit lives.
- Ice on the copper lines at the cabinet, which means airflow or refrigerant trouble.
