What Is a Blower Motor?

The indoor motor that pushes air across the cold coil and through your ducts to every room in the house.

Illustration of a blower motor

The blower motor is the workhorse inside your air handler. It spins a fan wheel that pulls warm air from the house through the return, pushes it across the cold evaporator coil, and drives the cooled air through the ductwork. If the outdoor unit is the muscle that removes heat, the blower is the circulation system that delivers the comfort.

Why blower motors matter in South Florida

Our cooling season is effectively ten months long, so a Florida blower motor logs far more hours than the same motor would up north. Restrictive filters, dirty coils, and undersized ducts make it work even harder, because the motor has to fight that resistance every minute it runs. High static pressure is one of the quietest motor killers there is, which is why duct problems so often show up later as motor problems.

Signs a blower motor is struggling

  • Weak airflow from every vent, not just one room.
  • Squealing, grinding, or humming from the indoor unit.
  • The system cools but the airflow cuts in and out.
  • A burning or hot electrical smell near the air handler, which is a reason to shut the system off and call.

What Kyzar checks

A blower that will not run is not automatically a dead motor. The capacitor that starts it, the control board that commands it, and the resistance it pushes against can each produce the same symptom. Our techs test the motor, its capacitor, and the static pressure before replacing anything, so you pay to fix the actual cause rather than the loudest suspect.
