The line set is the pair of copper pipes connecting the two halves of a split system. The larger, insulated line carries cool refrigerant vapor back to the outdoor unit; the smaller line carries liquid refrigerant to the indoor coil. Together they are the highway your system’s refrigerant travels, and every ounce of cooling your home receives passes through them.
Why line sets matter in South Florida
Line sets live a hard life here: baking sun, salt air near the coast, and decades of vibration. The foam insulation on the large line is the first casualty. Florida UV crumbles it, and once bare copper is exposed, the line sweats in our humidity and loses efficiency. Poorly supported lines can also rub against walls or each other until they wear thin and leak. And when a system is replaced, reusing an old line set without properly cleaning or evaluating it can contaminate a brand-new system, which is one of those invisible shortcuts that separates a spec-correct installation from a fast one.
Signs of a line set problem
- Crumbled or missing insulation on the big copper line outside.
- Ice forming anywhere along the lines.
- Oil stains at joints or bends, which often mark a slow refrigerant leak.
- Hissing near the lines or fittings.
