SEER2 stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2, the standard for rating how efficiently a system converts electricity into cooling across a season. It replaced the older SEER rating in 2023, using a tougher test that better reflects how ducted systems perform in real homes, which is why SEER2 numbers read slightly lower than the old SEER numbers for equivalent equipment. Federal minimums for our region require new systems in the southeast to meet at least 14.3 SEER2.
What the number means for your bill
Think of SEER2 like a car’s miles per gallon. Moving from an aging 10 SEER system to a modern 16 SEER2 system can cut the cooling portion of your electric bill by a third or more, and in South Florida the cooling portion is most of the bill for most of the year. Our long season is exactly the situation where efficiency differences compound: the more hours a system runs, the more every point of efficiency is worth.
The honest caveat about high SEER2 numbers
A rating is earned in a laboratory. A 17 SEER2 system installed on leaky, undersized ducts, or charged carelessly, will never deliver 17 SEER2 performance. Industry studies have found that most installations nationally miss manufacturer specification, and installation quality routinely swings real-world efficiency more than the sticker difference between two units. The rating is the ceiling; the installation decides how close you get to it.
