Why Is Water Dripping From an AC Vent in Delray Beach?

You notice it as a stain before you notice it as a drip. A gray ring on the ceiling around a supply vent, or a dark patch on the drywall that was not there in May. Sometimes there is an actual drop hanging off the register, and sometimes the carpet underneath just feels damp in a way you cannot explain.

It is unsettling because water in a ceiling reads as a plumbing disaster. Usually it is not. In a Delray Beach summer it is far more often warm, wet air meeting a cold surface it should never have been allowed to touch, and the fix is closer to insulation and drainage than to anything dramatic. The exception matters though, because a few of these are a genuine equipment fault, and telling them apart is the whole job. Either way it lands in AC maintenance rather than a callout to a plumber.

Here is how to work out which one you have.

Why Is Water Dripping From Your AC Vent in a Delray Beach Home?

There are really only four families of cause, and it is worth knowing them before you start looking.

The first is condensation on or around the vent itself, where cool metal or a cold duct meets humid air and sweats, exactly like a glass of iced tea on a patio table. The second is water arriving from somewhere else in the system, usually a blocked condensate drain or an overflowing drain pan finding its way along a duct and out through the nearest register. The third is a duct problem, where leaking or badly insulated ductwork lets attic air reach a cold surface. The fourth is a coil that has frozen and is now thawing, dumping more water than the drain was designed to carry.

Notice that three of those four are moisture problems and only one is really an equipment failure. That ratio is why the first thing to establish is not what broke, but where the water is coming from.

What Makes Delray Beach Humidity Sweat on AC Vents All Summer?

Because the difference between the air in your attic and the air moving through your ducts is enormous here, and the dew point does the rest.

Air holds a certain amount of moisture at a given temperature. Cool it past its dew point and that moisture has to go somewhere, so it condenses onto whatever did the cooling. In a Delray Beach August your attic can sit far above outdoor temperature while the air inside the duct is in the fifties. Any spot where those two meet through thin or damaged insulation becomes a condensing surface. The vent boot, the collar where the duct meets the ceiling, and the first foot of flex duct are the usual suspects, because those are the places where insulation is most often thin, compressed, or torn during another trade’s work.

This is a genuinely regional problem. In a dry climate the same duct in the same attic would never reach its dew point. Here it can happen most afternoons from June to October, which is why “duct sweating” is a phrase Florida contractors use and northern ones mostly do not.

One thing this is not is simply a matter of your indoor humidity number. A Florida homeowner posting about this exact problem was running the house at 69 degrees with indoor humidity already sitting between 45 and 50 percent, comfortably inside the band most advice calls ideal, and still getting drips at the vent. Whole-house humidity and duct-surface condensation are related but not the same thing, and you can fix the first while the second continues.

Is the Water on Your Vent Condensation or an AC Leak? A Delray Beach Check

You can usually separate these yourself in about ten minutes.

It reads as condensation if: the moisture is spread evenly over the vent face, the boot, or the visible duct rather than running from one point. It appears on humid afternoons and dries overnight. The drywall around the register is damp in a halo rather than soaked in a track. And the drain line outside is running normally.

It reads as a system leak if: water arrives at one spot and runs, especially in a steady trickle. It keeps going regardless of weather. There is standing water in the drain pan at the air handler. The system shut itself off unexpectedly, which usually means a float switch did its job. Or the staining is worse near the air handler than at the far vents.

The tiebreaker is location. Condensation shows up at the vents furthest from the air handler or on the longest attic runs, because those ducts have the most exposed surface. Drain problems show up nearest the equipment first. If your worst vent is the one closest to the unit, look at drainage before insulation.

Can a Frozen Evaporator Coil Drip Water From Delray Beach Vents?

Yes, and this one is worth understanding properly because it is one of the most common causes on any troubleshooting list, not an obscure one.

An evaporator coil that ices over is not producing more cold, it is failing to move air. Restricted airflow from a clogged filter, a closed-off return, or a dirty coil lets the surface drop below freezing, and condensation that should be draining away becomes a block of ice instead. Then the system cycles off, or you notice and shut it down, and all that ice melts at once. The drain pan and line were sized for a steady drip, not for a thaw, so the overflow goes wherever it can, including along a duct and out of a register.

The tell is a pattern rather than a moment. Weak airflow for a few days, then a burst of water, then apparently normal operation, then the same cycle again. If that sounds like your house, change the filter first and look at whether any supply registers have been closed, because starving the system of return air is the most common way homeowners cause this without realizing.

If the ice keeps returning after those two checks, stop there. Repeated freezing points at refrigerant charge or a genuinely dirty coil, and both need a tech with gauges.

How Can You Stop a Sweating AC Vent in Delray Beach Today?

If you have established it is condensation, most of the fix is unglamorous and durable.

Insulate and seal the transition. The joint where the duct meets the vent boot and the boot meets the drywall is where warm attic air most often reaches cold metal. Sealing that transition with mastic and making sure the surrounding insulation is intact and in contact stops the air exchange that creates the condensing surface in the first place. One home improvement video demonstrating this problem showed the water residue left on the duct where the dew point had been reached, then sealed the duct-to-drywall transition specifically so hot attic air could not meet the cool indoor air.

Restore airflow. A filter that is overdue makes the air colder than it should be and the surfaces more likely to condense. This is the cheapest thing on the list.

Do not close vents to “save” anything. Closing supply registers raises static pressure, cools the remaining air further, and makes sweating worse rather than better.

Look for moisture you are adding yourself. One homeowner chasing exactly this problem eventually found that a bathroom exhaust fan had been venting straight into the attic instead of out through the roof, quietly loading the space above the ceiling with warm, wet air. The AC was not failing. It was being asked to fight the bathroom.

When Does a Dripping Vent Point to Ductwork Trouble in Delray Beach?

When the sweating is widespread rather than at one register, or when it comes with symptoms that have nothing to do with water.

Ductwork that leaks does two things at once: it loses conditioned air into the attic, and it draws hot humid attic air into the system through the return side. ENERGY STAR puts typical duct air loss in a home at roughly 20 to 30 percent, which is a large amount of capacity going nowhere and a large amount of moisture coming in. If several vents sweat, if some rooms never cool properly, or if the system runs constantly without satisfying the thermostat, the ducts themselves are a fair suspect rather than the individual vent boots.

There is also a specific, easily missed failure point worth naming: the condensate trap. A drain line without a properly installed trap can fail to drain the way it should, and a plumbing and heating pro documenting a real second-floor ceiling leak in a field video traced it to exactly that, finding a full secondary drain pan and no trap where one belonged. It is not something most homeowners would ever look for, and it is a reasonable thing to ask about if drainage is the suspect.

Is Duct Cleaning the Real Fix for a Dripping Delray Beach Vent, or an Upsell?

Neither, usually. It is the wrong tool for this particular problem, and we can say that comfortably because we do not sell duct cleaning.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s guidance on duct cleaning is unusually direct. It does not recommend routine cleaning, notes that little evidence exists that cleaning ducts alone improves system efficiency, and recommends it only in specific conditions: substantial visible mold on the ducts or components, a vermin infestation, or debris actually blowing into the home through the registers. The line that matters most for a dripping vent is its prevention advice, which is that moisture should not be present in ducts and that controlling moisture is the most effective way to prevent biological growth. Its checklist points at fixing leaks, insulating properly, and making sure coils and pans drain, not at cleaning.

So if a dripping vent gets you a duct cleaning quote, the question to ask is what that cleaning is expected to change about the condensation. If the honest answer is nothing, you have your answer. Cleaning addresses dust, debris, and visible mold. It does not insulate a boot, seal a duct, or unclog a drain.

Where the EPA’s conditions genuinely are met, cleaning is reasonable. That is a different conversation from a wet vent.

Why Does Skipped AC Maintenance Show Up First as Dripping Delray Beach Vents?

Because the drain side of your system is the part that quietly stops working while everything else still appears fine.

The drain side of a system in this climate works harder than any other part of it, and algae and biofilm build in that line continuously in our humidity. The pan under the coil collects debris and eventually rusts. The filter loads faster than the box suggests. None of that changes your thermostat reading, so nothing prompts you to look until water appears somewhere it should not.

That is the honest reason a wet vent so often turns out to be a maintenance story rather than a failure story. The parts that were supposed to move water stopped being able to, gradually, over a season or two.

Keeping the condensate line clear is the single highest-value habit here, and it is the same habit that keeps a float switch from shutting your system down in August.

The Bottom Line on Water Dripping From AC Vents in Delray Beach

Start by working out whether you are looking at condensation or at water traveling from somewhere else. Even moisture across the vent face on humid afternoons is a sweating problem, and it is solved with insulation, sealing, and airflow. A running trickle from one point, standing water in the drain pan, or a system that shut itself off is a drainage or equipment problem, and it needs attention before it reaches your ceiling.

Check the filter, look at the drain pan, confirm no registers have been closed, and see whether anything else in the house is adding moisture to your attic. Those four take an evening and resolve a real share of these.

What a wet vent almost never needs is a duct cleaning, and it is worth knowing that before someone quotes you one.
